What is Dating Sunday?

First things first, what exactly is Dating Sunday anyway? It’s the name given to the first Sunday in January, which is traditionally the most active day of the year for online dating apps and sites. It dates back to at least 2015, and it’s been growing every year – it’s now so busy that many dating experts refer to it as “the Superbowl of online dating”.

Zoosk is no stranger to Dating Sunday activity. In fact, Dating Sunday on Zoosk is the crown jewel in a high season of increased interaction that kicks off with Cuffing Season and stays above average right through to Valentine’s Day.

What to Expect from Dating Sunday 2021 on Zoosk

In 2021, Zoosk is forecasting that Dating Sunday will be bigger than ever. The Zoosk data team is predicting that 2.58 million messages will be sent on the platform on January 3, dwarfing volumes from previous years.

While Zoosk inboxes are likely to be extra busy throughout Dating Sunday, the best time of the day to log in will be sometime after dinner, with the multi-million-message storm anticipated to peak around 9:30pm. The nice part? That’s 9:30 pm local time, as users arrive in waves from their various time zones.

Messaging is not the only activity that’s set for an increase. The Zoosk team looked at data from Dating Sunday 2020 to predict what kind of uplift to expect across the platform in 2021. If the same trends continue, January 3, 2021 is going to be an unmissable day of activity on Zoosk.

If trends follow the same patterns as last year, the top states for Dating Sunday activity will be Nevada, New Hampshire, and Hawaii: all three states saw a messaging uplift of more than 40% in 2020.

Why is Dating Sunday so Popular?

So why is the first Sunday in January such a popular day for online dating anyway? Kirill Priyatel, CCO of Zoosk and Spark Networks, thinks that it’s due to the proximity to the holidays mixed with the fact that Sundays are traditionally a very active day online.

He says “Sunday is typically the busiest day of the week on the Zoosk platform, as it’s when our members have the most free time to spend on online dating.

On Dating Sunday, we see this Sunday effect combining with the fact that many people have spent the holidays single and have just made a New Year’s resolution to find a relationship. This results in an extra busy day, with thousands of new members signing up to Zoosk, and millions of new messages being sent.”

Zoosk Connections Can Lead to Love

Of course, Zoosk isn’t all about sign ups and first messages. And there is data to suggest that your Dating Sunday connection could become something special – especially this year.

That’s because Dating Sunday comes on the heels of an extra successful time for Zoosk’s singles. In the last few months, there’s been a 7% increase in couples reporting that they’ve found love on Zoosk, suggesting that romance really is in the air this winter.

How to Make the Most of Online Dating’s Busiest Day

This holiday season is likely to look a little different than all the rest. Social distancing means that in-person gatherings could be reduced in size or cancelled all together, making it tricky to celebrate in any sort of traditional manner.
